After an amazing win for the girls at Lincoln High School, on January 28th, the whole of Urbandale was ready for another show of skill last Friday when the Urbandale girls varsity basketball team played Johnston. The Johnston girls took a swift lead of 13 points in the first quarter. The Urbandale girls were unable to make up the difference and at half time Urbandale was still losing 33-24. In the last two quarters of the game, both teams played their hardest but Johnston maintained their lead and won the game 62-45.
January 31st was elementary night and their section in the south gym was packed as well as the family section. The UHS students had a “pajama out” and crammed the student section. With a full crowd, the UHS cheerleaders were able to do an awesome gym wide cheer between the Middle School and the UHS student section. With the whole of the crowd pumped for the game, the Urbandale High school varsity boys came out on the court to warm up for the tough game ahead.
The Urbandale varsity boys started off the game strong and ended the first quarter with a free throw by McConkey which tied them with Johnston going into the 2nd quarter. Urbandale and Johnston played neck and neck the entirety of the second quarter and Urbandale went into halftime with a one-point lead. After half time Urbandale played more impressive than before gaining another five points to their lead and ending the 3rd quarter 46-40. The fourth quarter of the game is where things got intense. With three minutes and twenty-three seconds left of the game, Johnston caught up four points and at thirty seconds left Johnston took a one-point lead. The UHS student section was yelling as loud as they could when in the last five and a half seconds of the game Urbandale’s Drew Dykstra made a three-pointer and sent the game into overtime. Once again Urbandale and Johnston were neck and neck, with 5.1 seconds left on the clock DeKruyf goes to the line, the score is 65-62 and he needs to make at least one of the free throws. DeKruyf is short on the first shot but needs to make the second the assure an Urbandale win. Dekruyf throws a perfect basket and confirms a win for Urbandale. With 5.1 seconds on the clock, Johnston is unable to make a shot and as the last buzzer rings the UHS student section floods the gym floor.
This win was all-around awesome and was exactly what coach Jon Schmitz needed after their loss to Lincoln High School on January 28. The Urbandale girls and boys Varsity teams went on to play SouthEast Polk on February 3rd and both teams took a tough loss. Join the Urbandale boys and girls varsity teams as they get ready to play again on Friday, Feb 7th at Dowling Catholic High School.
