On March 21st, 2019, Special Counsel Robert Mueller turned in his report to Attorney General William Barr. Mueller’s report was a compilation of his research into the investigation on Russian interference with the 2016 Presidential election as well as other crimes both President Trump and members of his campaign may have committed. Mueller has been working on this report for nearly two years now and it is finally completed.
According to the New York Times, Robert Mueller was appointed by the FBI in May of 2017. He and his team have been looking into whether or not any Russians tried to interfere with the 2016 presidential race. They also looked into whether or not President Trump or anyone tied to his campaign had knowingly or unknowingly worked with Russians.
Attorney General Barr sent a letter to Congress alerting them of the completion of the Mueller report. The beginning of the letter read, “I write to notify you pursuant to that Special Counsel Robert S. Mueller III has concluded his investigation of Russian interference in the 2016 election and related matters.”
According to the Washington Post, on March 24th Mr. Barr released a four-page letter to Congress. Mr. Barr said that those four pages were a “principle conclusion” of Mr. Mueller’s almost 400 page report.
House Representative from Louisiana Steve Scalise stated, “[Those reports] confirm what we’ve known all along: There was never any collusion with Russia.” Representative Scalise is the second-highest-ranking Republican in the House of Representatives.
The New York Times also reported that many Democrats, especially those who wish to win the Presidency in 2020, are asking that the full report be published for the public to read. Mr. Mueller’s report is almost 400 pages long.
Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi (CA) and and Senator Chuck Schumer (NY) warned Mr. Barr not to allow the White House a sneak preview of the document.
Speaker Pelosi and Senator Schumer said in a joint interview, “The White House must not be allowed to interfere in decisions about what parts of those findings or evidence are made public.”
President Trump himself has said in interviews, “Let the people see it. There was no collusion. There was no obstruction. There was nothing.”
So far Congress has only seen a summary of the Mueller report and it is unknown whether or not they or the general public will get to see more. Democrats and even President Trump himself have said the public should see it. It is unclear if more of the report will be shown to Congress and if any will be released to the public. This event is just something that Americans will have to wait out until a conclusion is made.
