Carl’s Commute to Minneapolis

Over Martin Luther King Jr. Day weekend, I went to visit Minneapolis, Minnesota! I didn’t have to get up very early, but it did take what felt like forever to me. It was a little over a three hour car ride.

When we first arrived, we got settled in at the Crowne Royal Plaza, and we headed out to Gasthof Zur Gemutlichkeit, a German restaurant just inside of Minneapolis. I ordered the sauerbraten and apfelstrudel for desert, both dishes were absolutely amazing.  Sauerbraten is a German pot roast, typically made with beef, but it can also be made with any kind of meat. Apfelstrudel is simply a German pastry that typically consists of apples, cinnamon, raisins, and sometimes plums. The dough acts as a blanket, covering the sweet apple filling.  We then went back to the hotel for a good night sleep to prepare for the lengthy day ahead of us.

Sunday morning we woke up, quickly got ready, and boarded the train to take us to Mall of America. In Minneapolis, it was absolutely freezing, thankfully at the train station there were little heat lamps. There were tons and tons of people there, many hovering around the new Minnesota Vikings exhibit. We went into so many stores, I even lost count! That day we had Bubba Gump’s in the mall and it was pretty good, for mall food I guess. Once we arrived back at the hotel we quickly got in the hot tub to warm up.

On Monday, our last day, we left the hotel and made a final stop at IKEA for some swedish meatballs. Finally, we were back on the road and headed home.
